| Above is a bit of a celebration of the Special Theatrical Event category at the 2009 Tonys. I'm enthralled by the diversity... Liza's at the Palace, Will Ferrell's You're Welcome America, Soul of Shaolin, and Slava's Snowshow.
At the right is a piece depicting some of my impressions of the Tony ceremonies on June 7, 2009. The bottom portion of the piece features the immense opening number, and the top portion of the sketch features some favorite speech moments. |

June 7th, Broadway fans around the world were glued to the TV (or were sitting in Radio City Music Hall) for the Tony awards. But why are they called "Tony" awards?
Of course the name comes from Antoinette Perry, early twentieth century actress, director, and co-founder of the American Theatre Wing. When the awards were first presented, she had recently passed on. So, in her honor, the medallion was named. Learn more about Ms. Perry at the Tony's official site... click HERE. You can also check out a sketch I did last year representing the 2008 musical nominees... HERE. |
